Films about France are always special, romantic, soulful, and sometimes very funny.
These films are filled with love. And, of course, they are insanely beautiful.
We see endless lavender fields, turquoise sea coasts, dense emerald forests, and ancient
castles. France is amazing, and you can see this by watching at least a couple of films
from my selection!
So, today I am sharing my favorite English movies set in France. I hope they inspire you
on new trips and cheer you up.
Beautiful films with French landscapes
Paris Can Wait, 2016
IMDb 5.8
Paris Can Wait is an American comedy melodrama. The bored wife of a tough
businessman is forced to drive from the Cote d’Azur to Paris by car. A short trip with her
husband’s partner, Frenchman Jacques, became a real lesson for her in the art of living in
French easily, elegantly and tasty.
In this picture, Eleanor Coppola conveyed all her love for France. A romantic story against
the backdrop of French beauty with the graceful timbre of her traveling companion as he
talks about sights, food, and wine.
I hope to repeat the main character’s path from Cannes to Paris one day.
I advise that the film to everyone spinning in the turmoil of affairs. Stop and look around;
life is beautiful!
Marie Antoinette, 2006
IMDb 6.5
The brilliant and tragic fate of the French Queen Marie Antoinette will always amaze and
horrify posterity.
She had a carefree childhood in the family of his father, the Emperor of Austria. Early
marriage at 15 with the heir of Louis XV himself! Accession to the French throne at 19 and
youth full of endless entertainment among the luxury of Versailles. And, finally, a sudden,
terrible death on the guillotine under the hooting of the Parisian mob.
Sofia Coppola has created a unique film in its atmosphere and character. When viewing,
the illusion is created that you and Marie Antoinette are walking through her garden, eating
a cake from her finger, and trying on a new dress.
There is no need to talk about costumes and interiors. They are pleasing to the eye, and
you can admire them endlessly. The surroundings and atmosphere of the luxurious
Versailles are perfectly conveyed. It was like being in a fairy tale!
This picture is a paradise for the visual and fans of glamour.
Chocolat, 2000
IMDb 7.3
Driven by the “wise north wind,” a mother and her little daughter open a chocolate shop in
the French outback. Having thus shaken up the quiet and peaceful life of a small town,
they meet with great resistance from the town’s mayor.
It is a wonderful and instructive film with a deep psychological meaning. If you want to read
more about this picture, check Chocolat 2000 movie analysis.
Most of the filming occurred in the medieval French town of Flavigny in Burgundy.
Fascinating, this city has a confectionery factory that produces anise sweets, which are
popular in France. Interestingly, although most of the movie was filmed in France, all the
scenes with Johnny Depp were shooted in the UK.
Juliette Binoche also visited a chocolate shop in Paris to learn how chocolates are made.
French Kiss, 1995
IMDb 6.6.
In the life of the eccentric American Kate, two of her worst nightmares come true. First, her
fiancé left her. And the second – to save him, she will have to fly to Paris by plane, and she
is terribly afraid of flying.
On the plane, she meets a rude but charming Frenchman, Luc, a smuggler who puts an
expensive necklace in her purse. Now they are forced to continue their acquaintance
reluctantly.
It is a beautiful melodrama about the power of love, desire, and journey.
It’s an American film, but there’s plenty of France here! You will see its capital – brilliant
Paris, Provence’s pastoral landscapes with beautiful vineyards and the pearl of the Cote
d’Azur Cannes.
Not a movie but a treat for the eyes.
The Bourne Identity, 2002
IMDb 7.9
The crew of an Italian fishing boat finds the body of a man in the waters of the
Mediterranean Sea. He has two bullet wounds in his back and a microfilm implanted in his
thigh marked with a Swiss bank number. When the stranger wakes up, he does not
remember who he is or what happened to him, but he can speak several languages and
has other unusual abilities. Trying to recover his past, he finds his address in Paris, but at
the same time, he realizes that the killer is tracking him.
It is one of my favorite films of this genre. Lots of action, beautiful locations in Paris, and
exciting plot twists. Worth a watch if you like films about special agents and intelligence.
A Good Year, 2006
IMDb 6.9
The boss of the London Stock Exchange, an insanely smart, successful manager and
part-time big bore, inherits a winery in Provence. Upon arrival in France, he discovers that
there are still people claiming his rightful property beside him. A chain of incredible events
and discoveries will make him take a fresh look at the true values of this world.
Oh, it is a charming film about a villa in Provence with vineyards. After watching it, I want
to buy a ticket and visit these lovely places. Or better yet, settle for a week in a villa with
your vineyard.
The atmosphere of the sunny south, green expanses, warm golden colors, sensual music,
excellent camera work, and decent acting turn banal, at first glance, melodrama into a
story that you will never forget!
Midnight In Paris, 2011
IMDb 7.7
A writer and hopeless romantic, confident that he was supposed to live in the 1920s,
comes to Paris with his sweetheart for the holidays and finds himself in the past. Meeting
there with Hemingway, Picasso, the Fitzgeralds, and Gertrude Stein, he understands that
he belongs to this time and wants to stay there forever.
A little fantasy doesn’t hurt each of us, right? Great actors, a fantastic storyline, and
costumes.
Paris is more than simply a backdrop; it plays a role in everything happening, the
characters and their universe. Insanely beautiful French melodies, which pleasantly caress
the ear, are in perfect harmony with all the details of the film. And the way Paris of the
twenties is depicted in this film is a fairy tale.
Woody Allen, as always, created a masterpiece.
The Hundred-Foot Journey, 2014
IMDb 7.3
A family of Indian emigrants who have been brought to a small town in Provence decide to
open a café with oriental cuisine right in front of the famous Weeping Willow restaurant in
the whole area, a bastion of French culinary traditions, whose owner, Madame Malory, is
most proud of the fact that Her establishment has been awarded a star in the Michelin
catalog.
At first, Madame Malory does not hide her disgust with noisy neighbors and their exotic
habits. Still, gradually the war for customers between the two restaurants is replaced by a
shaky truce, especially when it turns out that the young émigré chef Hassan is the owner
of perfect taste. He also feels French cuisine recipes, like the secrets of Indian spices.
It is a very, very enjoyable film about cooking and France. The film shows well what
Michelin stars are and their importance to a restaurant.
The film was shot in the picturesque south of France. The Weeping Willow and Mumbai
Manor restaurants were built in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.
The spirit of aristocratically refined France and fervently punchy India pervades this
picture.
The Hustle, 2019
IMDb 5.4.
How to become a successful scammer? First, always be fully armed: high heels, bright
lipstick, and, most importantly, slimming underwear. Be ready to cry at any moment. No
man can resist women’s tears. Take everything that “lays badly” and shines nicely. Behind
every million, there can be a billion. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of checking.
A modern American heist movie! Classics of the genre. The cast with the gorgeous Anne
Hathaway and picturesque locations in southern France.
This film is a remake of the film “Dirty Scoundrels” (1988)
I warn you, this picture does not carry a special semantic load; its primary goal is to amuse
the beholder and cheer up.
Dunkirk, 2017
IMDb 7.8
The film tells the story of the miraculous rescue of more than three hundred thousand
soldiers during the Dunkirk operation, which took place at the beginning of World War II.
In Dunkirk, there is no military pathos or jingoistic patriotism. It is a simple story of the
evacuation of 400,000 soldiers from the German encirclement. Their only dream is to
return home alive. They do not want to die heroically for a just cause. There are only
soldiers here who rely on the animal survival instinct and run.
Dunkirk uses a full range of film techniques so that the viewer does not empathize with
someone in particular but lives what is happening on the screen. As a result, you will
painfully wait for salvation, drown and freeze.
The shooting of the film “Dunkirk” was carried out in a place where real events took place
during the Second World War. As such, the film crew spent considerable time in France,
England, and the Netherlands.
The town of Dunkirk, where the evacuation shown in the film occurred, is located in
northern France, about 6 miles from the Belgian border.
Nothing inspires new travels like vivid films. With their help, you can study people, new
cultures, national food, city architecture, and nature.
GUEST POST BY OLGA-
Hi, my name is Olga. I`m a mom of two sons, a wife, and a long-time movie lover. I have
always loved cinema and psychology and asked myself often: Can a film be a personal
therapist? The answer is obvious: it can.
A talented film can turn the soul and change consciousness. So why does a fine movie
sometimes work faster than a psychotherapist? What mechanisms are activated within us
when we watch a movie? And how do you turn a simple viewing into personal
psychotherapy? You will find answers in articles at Good Movie Finder.

I love French movies (that just so happen to be in English, for convenience). Chocolat is by fa my favorite. Johnny Depp does such an amazing job in this film! Dunkirk is another fantastic one. We watched this as a family in 2016, and my dad was able to go and get all his uncle’s papers showing that he had served in Dunkirk during the war. He was one of the last off the beaches that day.
Catherine says
Wow! That’s amazing that you have such a connection to that movie. Thank you for sharing that. I love little bits of history like that.
