Have you ever been curious about using shampoo or conditioner bars? When I began cutting out single-use plastics, I looked at shampoo and conditioner bars as an alternative to these products in bottles.
I had a lot of questions and wanted to know all the benefits (besides creating no waste) of them.
If you are in the same boat and wondering if you should switch to plastic free solid shampoo bars, I have put together a list of the benefits!
It’s time to start creating less waste, using natural products that are good for your skin and body, and having healthy hair!
What Are Shampoo and Conditioner Bars?
Shampoo and conditioner bars are a small bar made up of natural ingredients that replace regular liquid shampoo. They do the same exact same job, but one is better for you and the environment.
They are made with all natural ingredients, and are more healthy for your hair. Traditional shampoo can have ingredients that will strip your hair of its natural oils, and you don’t have to worry about that with a shampoo bar!
Shampoo and conditioner bars can usually (depending on the size) replace two to three bottles of liquid shampoo.

What Are The Benefits of Shampoo and Conditioner Bars?
1. All Natural Ingredients
Traditional shampoos and conditioners can be packed full of harsh chemicals that are bad for your hair, skin, and scalp.
They can strip your hair of it’s natural oils and lead to dry hair. This can also cause you to have a dry and itchy scalp.
Natural shampoo bars are made with natural ingredients. Some of those ingredients consist of essential oils, cocoa butter, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, shea butter, argan oil, and jojoba oil, just to name a few.
These ingredients are all natural and mother earth approved! They are safe for you and the environment.
2. They Create No Waste
Plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental issues our world is facing right now. Humans produce and dispose of about 350 metric tons of plastic each year (that’s insane!!).
Plastic pollution is something that should be avoided if possible. Plastic takes a really long time to break down and disappear once it makes it to a landfill. Many times, plastic pollutes the oceans and land around us instead of making it to the landfill.
Recycling plastic doesn’t always mean that it gets recycled, either. The best option is to cut out plastic!
Shampoo and conditioner bars are the best sustainable option to help cut down on plastic bottles.
Can you imagine a shower without bottles? I can! Shampoo and conditioner bars are packaged in minimal materials or containers that are biodegradable or compostable. Once a shampoo or conditioner bar is used up, there is nothing left!
Shampoo and conditioner bars create no waste and are the perfect solution to help cut down on plastic waste in the bathroom.
3. They Are Great for Any Hair Type
Shampoo bars, like liquid shampoo, are created for different hair types. Shampoo bars are created to clean, wash away dirt, and leave hair soft and manageable.
Shampoo and conditioner bars are also created for different hair types.
There are bars for curly hair, dry hair, thin hair, thick hair, oily hair, and more! Whatever your hair type is, you can find a shampoo and conditioner bar for it.

4. They Are Perfect for Travel
Traditional liquid shampoos, conditioners, and other beauty care is a pain when traveling! Trying to fit all my liquids into the proper size bottles in a quart size baggie is my least favorite part about packing.
Shampoo and conditioner bars a great option to help cut down on the stress at the airport.
I love to use solid shampoo and conditioner bars (and soap bars) bars because it makes getting through airport security much easier!
Concentrated Ingredients
Liquid shampoo has SO MANY ingredients! Just look at the back of the bottle for yourself. Out of all the ingredients, most of it consists of water.
Shampoo bars have a higher concentration of other ingredients that are more natural and better for you. They also contain less water, so you are getting more of what you pay for!
How to Use Them?
Shampoo and conditioner bars are very easy to use. Put them in the palm of your hands, rub your hands and the bar together, and get a good lather going. Then, rub them through your hair and wash.
Rinse the shampoo out. Then, do the same thing with the solid conditioner bars.
The best way to store the solid shampoo and conditioner bars is to put them on a slotted soap dish like you would a bar of soap. I prefer to use one made from natural ingredients like bamboo. These will allow the bars to dry and last longer.
Once the product is gone, there will be nothing left. No plastic packaging to be thrown out. Grab a new bar and put it in the shower for the next time you need it.

I was thinking about trying the shampoo bars, but I was afraid that they would leave my hair dryer. After reading your article and finding out that they’re better than the regular stuff (+environmentally friendly) I’m willing to give it a shot.
Recently I tried a dish detergent that came in a glass jar and it was fantastic.

I’m glad I could help make a decision on the shampoo bars! I have used some in the past that made my hair a little oily, but most all of the ones I’ve tried have been great. Them being eco-friendly is even better! I love things that come in glass! (lol)

I’ve considered using shampoo and conditioner bars for travel. But how do you suggest storing them for transport and drying them out at a hotel?
Catherine says
I usually leave mine in the shower overnight at the hotel, they will be dry by the time you get ready to leave in the morning. They should have a soap holder in the shower. I like to use a silicone travel case like you would use for a bar of soap! They travel well.

I did not know about shampoo bars. I like that they are all natural ingredients.
Catherine says
They are wonderful! I’m glad I could introduce something new to you 🙂
Lisa says
Even with normal shampoos, some are better than others. I tend to like high end shampoos that do not cause build up. Do they make high end bars?
Catherine says
Of course! I tried several different shampoo bars before I found the brand that I love. There are cheaper/more expensive options just like with regular shampoo. I would do a little research before trying any if you’re wanting something more high-end. Lush and Seek Bamboo are 2 brands that have amazing reviews and offer a variety of options for different hair types.
