The month of love has finally arrived, and we will all soon be out buying gifts, candy, and cards for our loved ones (if you’ve already done this, way to go!) on February 14th. I enjoy buying gifts as much as anyone, but it makes me even happier when I know I am buying gifts that will be less likely to harm the environment.
Why not have a more sustainable Valentine’s Day this year? There are plenty of eco-friendly Valentine’s gifts. Below I have listed some of my favorite eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gifts. These ideas are perfect for spouses, children, your bestie, or any special person in your life!
14 Eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift ideas
1. a seed card
I recently learned about plantable seed cards, and I wish I had known about them sooner! It is a wonderful idea to give a seed card for any occasion! Instead of someone just reading the card and storing it away (or throwing it away), they can read it, plant it, and then have beautiful flowers grow from the seeds in it. They will think about the person who gave them the card every time they see those flowers!
Seed cards can also cut down on paper waste since the cards won’t be getting thrown away. The cards are made from compostable or biodegradable paper, and they will be getting planted (hopefully).
There are seed cards for every occasion and holiday- start using these on Valentine’s Day with the perfect card for your loved one.
You can also make seed cards instead of buying them. Making seed cards would be such a fun activity for the kids to make cards for their friends and family!
2. a card made from recycled paper
Cards made from recycled paper will bring joy to the person you give them to. These cards will also help protect the environment because they are much more sustainable and eco-friendly than giving a regular card to someone.
By using recycled paper, you are saving trees, saving water, and creating less waste. Mother Earth will thank you!
You can learn more about why using recycled paper is good for the environment here.
3. Cards from Recycled Materials
How many types of other papers can there be for greeting cards? Many more than I ever realized! A few other types of paper made from recycled materials are lemongrass paper, tea paper, upcycled cotton, and more! Giving a card made from other types of paper or material is such a neat and environmentally friendly Valentine’s Day gift idea. You’ll have a blast picking out the perfect card!
These cards help to cut down on waste because they are made from leftover materials and recycled into paper. They are fully compostable as well, which creates less waste at home!
These cards are a win-win. They are better for the environment and will be loved by whoever receives them. Grab your favorite card and candy for the perfect environmentally friendly gift for someone in your life.

4. Natural Soap
Any woman (and some men, too!) would love hand soap as a gift for Valentine’s Day.
Natural soap is one of my favorite sustainable Valentine’s Day gifts. I love good-smelling hand soap, and it comes in plastic-free packaging!
Natural soap is free of harsh chemicals and toxins! It is much better for your skin. It also smells wonderful, and it looks beautiful, too.
Put a smile on someone’s face for Valentine’s Day with this perfect gift!
5. Indoor plants or seeds
Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.“

Do you have someone in your life who has a green thumb and loves plants?
Gardening is one of my favorite pastimes. Receiving a house plant or seeds to grow my own flowers or start a garden makes me so happy! This is much better than fresh cut flowers or red roses because it will last much longer.
Spring is around the corner, so seeds are also the perfect gift to get a garden started. A garden will bring continuous happiness for a long time.
An indoor or potted plant or seeds are the perfect environmentally friendly gift for the plant lover in your life.
6. Loose Leaf Tea
Loose-leaf tea is a special and thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift for someone who loves tea or warm beverages. It’s also a great environmentally friendly Valentine’s Day gift! Loose-leaf tea is all-natural and has great health benefits.
It is also zero waste. It doesn’t create any waste because it can be composted after use.
Pair loose-leaf tea with a beautiful coffee cup, stainless steel infuser, and a spoon for the perfect eco-friendly Valentine’s Day gift.
If you need some inspiration on tea- White Peony loose-leaf tea is one of my favorites! It has the perfect fresh and floral taste.
7. Candy In a Box
Everyone loves to get candy for special occasions (at least, I know I do!). Chocolate is the perfect Valentine’s Day gift, so why not make it environmentally friendly?
You can!
Buying candy in boxes rather than plastic wrapping is the best option. You can recycle the box rather than throw the plastic packaging away.
Spoil your loved one with their favorite candy this year for Valentine’s Day!
8. Experiences
Who doesn’t love to be gifted with an experience? I would much rather make a memory with someone I love than get material things!
Some ideas for gifting an experience would be concert tickets, a day at an amusement park, taking them to see their favorite movie, going out for an expensive dinner, and more!
Think of something special your loved one would want to do and surprise them this Valentine’s Day!
9. Handmade Gifts
Handmade gifts are the best kinds of gifts. I think handmade gifts are thoughtful and unique.
Some of the best and most interesting gifts I have ever received were handmade!
Etsy is the perfect place to start when looking for a handmade gift. You can find jewelry, notecards, shirts, and more that are handmade by someone!
Handmade items from local artisans or small businesses are also a great choice. Supporting the artists in your community is always special.
Handmade gifts are made with love.
Surprise your loved one with a unique, thoughtful, and exciting handmade gift for this year’s perfect Valentine’s Day gift!

A wallet card is the perfect way to make someone special in your life smile! Every time they see the card in their wallet or purse, they will think of you.
It is a better option than a greeting card because it can be kept with the person you love all the time.
12. A Keychain
A keychain is a great physical gift that is eco-friendly.
Most everyone has a set of keys that they carry with them.
Choose from keychains with love notes, a fun character, or something that makes you think of the person you’re giving it to.
13. A Gift From Upcycled Materials
I love upcycled art and other items. It is so much fun to see what people can turn things into!
The best place to find a gift from upcycled items is at some kind of art festival, but there could be a studio near you that creates these kinds of pieces.
Check out your local artists and festivals and see what you can find.
14. Quality Time
Spending time together is special, especially for a friend, spouse, or partner who has a love language of quality time.
Work some free time into your schedule to spend some quality time doing the things you both love!
Instead of spending money on throwaway gifts, the gift of your time is priceless!
Make some new memories together, eat your favorite foods, read your favorite books together, or simply do nothing and just enjoy each other’s presence.

These are some great ideas. Especially since my wife is such a PIA to shop for seeing how she always buys whatever she wants on the spot.
I am curious about the seed card though. Would they be good with a female who has literally killed a cactus? LOL. If so then I may look more into it.
Catherine says
Considering I have killed a cactus before (insert laughy face), I still think they’re great! I love my plants these days and take better care of them, but what I love the most is that they are biodegradable. Even if you kill the plant, you still didn’t contribute to more waste! Lol
